MOTU 828 mk3 hybrid - part 2 - Summer Club Setup

A couple of weeks ago I was leading the band for our church's Summer Club. We have 350+ children attend, so it's pretty big(!) and we have some great guys who come and play in the band. However, because we set up a stage for the band at the side of our normal stage, we have to run the sound slightly differently. I have led the band for three years now and we've done something different each year! This year was no exception, given my new toy (well, OK it's a bit more than a toy!).

The band consisted of:

MOTU 828 mk3 hybrid - part 1

I finally bit the bullet and bought a MOTU 828 mk3 hybrid. I have known about the 828 for a while, but hadn't seriously considered it until fairly recently. A couple of months ago I researched into a new audio interface that might give me lower latency times than my current interface, a NI Audio Kontrol 1. I had heard good things about the MOTU interfaces, so had a look at the range. I was seriously impressed by the UltraLite as well as the 828, in particular how it might be useful as a small standalone mixer as well as an audio interface.

Visual Sound Route 66 V2 (updated)

Well this doesn't happen every day - I won a guitar pedal in a gear giveaway! I've won a Visual Sound Route 66 V2. This is all courtesy of Vicky Beeching and I am really looking forward to it arriving. I'll update this page when it comes with the low down on what I think, but I am really excited as it sounds like the sort of thing I might really like.

Line6 Wireless Microphones

I've recently started looking at current radio microphones, or should I now say wireless microphone systems? In the past I've been involved in recommending and installing radio microphone systems for a few of the churches I've belonged too. One church went for a simpler system just involving a pair of stand alone receivers and the other was a system that included an antenna distribution unit and remote antennae.

Pedal Power! (Running backing tracks)

Stage setup

A week or so ago I had my largest ever stage setup! I took a snap on my phone. Rob, who was playing bass for me, counted 33 pedals. The main reason for it was that I had bought a Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller off eBay and wanted to try out a couple of new ideas right away to see how they might run. Essentially I wanted to try out running backing tracks with the band, adding something that we couldn't create ourselves, or add something we could add ourselves, but free us up to add something more to the sound we were producing. Anyway, simple steps to start with...

IEM Update

Yesterday I tried the one thing I hadn't previously tried with my wired IEM setup - that is to run my microphone directly into the headphone amp to use the "more me" feature, essentially to give me control of my vocal level in the mix, rather than relying on the guys at the back mixing it in for me. So, a quick reminder of my setup and then my experience yesterday:

Leading with IEM

Yesterday I had a busy day at church, playing in one music group in the morning and leading one in the evening. Both times I used my make-shift In Ear Monitoring (IEM) solution. I had a mixed bag of issues and thoughts about my set up and IEM in general, with some things to work on for next time.

In Ear Monitoring (IEM)

Yesterday I tried using headphones for foldback for the first time. This is usually referred to as In Ear Monitoring, or something similar. I ran the regular foldback signal, that is normally plugged into a powered Yamaha speaker, into a small Behringer headphone amplifier (MA400). I had to make up a cable to get the mono signal to work correctly with the headphone amplifier, but other wise this worked fine. I then had a headphone extension cable plugged into the output of this and ran this up behind where I was playing.

Holy

We spent yesterday lunch and afternoon with some friends and I had a bit of a jam on the guitar. One idea that was shared with me was to use the riff from Daniel Bedingfield's "Gotta Get Thru This" over Brenton Brown's "Holy". You basically get bass and guitar to play the riff through for the verses. It doesn't work for the chorus and bridge - you just have to adapt it and work something out in a similar style or do what you like here. It is a fun arrangement anyway.
